Folks,

In ignorant innocence I asked what's the "BEST TYPE FIRE EXTINGUISHER".

Next thing I know we are into Magnesium or Not Magnesium, Burning Engines, Firing Guns into the air and Buying flannel shirts :)

As always ...... Excellent debate and wonderful info .... and somewhere in the middle of all that, an answer to my question, I think.

To Summarize the Input:

Regular Household / Automotive Chemical Fire Extinguishers Bad ... (Never did get clear on why) Halon ... (Good but environmental concerns and expensive) Water ... Bad CO2 ... Questionable (Didn't seem to have a lot of support) Several Bags of Sand ... (Good, Environmentally Friendly, but bulky & Heavy) Big Shot Fire Suppressant ... (Good no environmental concerns but expensive)

For my needs in a 1990 Westy Syncro / WaterBoxer on an extended trip .... it seems there are two good solutions:

Halon:

Model A16001211 Halon Fire Extinguisher Duration of discharge-seconds - 14-16 sec. Cost - $159.99 Thanks to Todd Last <Rubatoguy@MINDSPRING.COM> For a source: See: http://www.h3r.com/products/a1600_2_hv.htm

Big Shot Fire Suppressant :

Model Big Shout Fire Extinguisher Duration of discharge-seconds > 12-14 sec. Cost - $142.45 Thanks to Tom Kirk tjakirk@mcn.net For a source: See: http://www.mapgear.net//

Since the cost is comparable ...... I believe I will go with the Big Shot because ... Environmentally Friendly.

If anyone knows of problems with the Big Shot Fire Extinguisher, it's Chemical Compuistion or errors in this assessment,

Please input your feedback.

Brilliant Debate.

Happy Trails,
