Take a look at www.syncro.org, tech links, oils for the tranny and
differential. You will not believe the difference Redline gear oil will
make in your tranny. Your cold weather symptoms are because the oil is very
thick until it warms up, and Redline will all but eliminate that as well.
As to replacement, yes, you just drain it, replace the plug, and then fill
it. It's full when oil runs out of the fill hole (as long as the van is
sitting level). You can also pre-measure the correct amount, and pump it
in. When you drain, take a look at the old oil and look for metal or brass
bits. They may be an early indicator of upcoming tranny repairs. It's
cheaper to rebuild a tranny before it self-destructs.
I believe VW says you don't need to change the tranny oil, but I would
anyway. I usually go about 50K between changes.
To my knowledge, there is no stick shift fluid or clutch fluid, other than
the fluid for the hydraulic clutch (shared reservoir with the brakes, behind
the instrument cluster).
