Subject: Fan Runs Constant- ideas?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Calling Central Brain!.....Hey everyone....

Thanks to Jay Snyder, Mark Drillock and everyone else who helped me through my first coolant system crash and eventual repair. Everything seems to be running just fine....except one thing of course. There's always one more thing!

It has to do with my Radiator fan. It won't shut off. Ever. Never ever. I have to get under there and plug it in and unplug it when I leave the vehicle. I replaced the radiator fan switch just for kicks. My thermostat is opening properly...I found that out when I had to bleed the system of air and refill. I read some of the archives, but didn't see too much on the fan not shutting off. I did see something about some transistor was it?..behind the left front headlight....could this maybe be it? Everything else seems to be working just fine...everything from the pressure tank to the fan relay switch is just goshdarn great.

Any ideas on the switch that just won't switch?...oh, and also...if fans on Vanagons have two speeds..(which I did not know until the archives told me)...then I would take a guess that my fan is stuck on high....because that baby really blows!

Oh, yes, and some history on the fan....when I first got the van, the fan was simply unplugged. Hmmm I wondered. Plugging it in (there is a plastic plug in right up by the fan itself) it did nothing. When I was in the middle of my coolant system fix, I took 'er out for a drive to check everything out, etc....no fan coming on still....until I went under there and prompted it with a stick! then it went on for the first time. Went home, shut down, next day...no fan coming on. A couple of days later, on my way to work, the fan just suddenly went on!! I thought she had come back to life!! But now, it just won't go off....ever.

TIA,

Dustin, '85 Vangon - "Chuba!"
