If so, there's almost certainly no need for a new starter. Pull off the solenoid, take it apart (I posted a hopelessly verbose description of how to do it three to five years ago), and lube the solenoid shaft with a good waterproof grease if possible. Put it back together. Start it up. Should take care of things for another five years... Uh, my van is an '81, I don't know if things changed much with the waterboxers, knowing VW I doubt it! Gary |
