Hi All, I recently bought an 87 Vanagon GL (Wolfsburg) w/ 2.1L wasserboxer, and have been enjoying the wealth of information on the net about Vanagon engine swaps, but remain confused by the statements in the first paragraph of this page: http://www.volkswagen.org/EngineSwap/Default.htm Especially the part about "The need for special bell housing adapters or other complicated stuff like that is not necessary in the VW world". I'm guessing it should also say something like this regarding Vanagons: 1. Rabbit/Scirroco/Jetta(older?) gas engines >>>will not<<< bolt onto either gas or diesel Vanagon transaxles without use of an adapter plate. 2. R/S/J diesel engines, as well as GTI/Golf/Jetta(some?) and newer gas or diesel VW engines >>>will <<< bolt onto the diesel Vanagon transaxle bellhousing without use of an adapter; and most folks put the diesel bellhousing on a gas Vanagon transaxle for the better gear ratios. Please tell me, am I even close?!?! I am ignoring, of course, the obvious question of why anyone would want to use one of the older/smaller VW engines on a Vanagon! |
