I didn't catch the beginning of this thread, but I'm wondering if this is the dreaded "didn't want to start when hot but now doesn't start at all except sometimes when you bang on the starter solenoid" problem?

If so, there's almost certainly no need for a new starter. Pull off the solenoid, take it apart (I posted a hopelessly verbose description of how to do it three to five years ago), and lube the solenoid shaft with a good waterproof grease if possible. Put it back together. Start it up. Should take care of things for another five years...

Uh, my van is an '81, I don't know if things changed much with the waterboxers, knowing VW I doubt it!

Gary
