Subject: Re: Gearbox drain plug
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Hi Clive,

The drain plug is located under and near the front of the gearbox. It faces forward and down at 45 degrees below the horizontal. The correct tool is a 17mm hex key.

The drain plug has a magnetic rod inside which catches any ferrous metal swarf. However, the non-ferrous swarf and powder remains inside the gearbox when you drain the oil ... unless of course you face the fan down a steep hill when draining ... <g>

The dual purpose fill/level plug is on the side of the gearbox. You should fill the transmission slowly until the oil is just about to run out of the hole.

There was a period in the 1980s when some VW cars were built without any oil drain plug. You had to suck out the old oil through the fill/level hole using pumps that were designed for the purpose. I don't think the VW vans' gearboxes ever took that route.

Best regards,

Tony
