I have an 84 as well and I know the "pain" of those pesky springs. My padding was completely gone in both front seats. However, what I did was to go to the local junk yard and found a couple of wrecked Vanagons. I was able to purchase like new front seats (captain's chairs too, btw), for $25 each. I had to remove the arm rests from the doors in order to make them fit. But, I sure do enjoy the "new" seats. I also was able to buy a "jump seat" that was in one of those vanagons (actually, it was the same vanagon as the front seats came from) for $25 and added it to my Westy van for those times when I'm not camping but want to carry another person. Works great (didn't use the holes in the floor. just bolted the bar to the battery compartment so it easily disconnects).

It's a thought and might be worth checking out. It certainly is easier than repadding the seats. . . and probably cheaper too.
