Golly. The prices at my VW dealer on the whole, are on par with the competition, and they can get their hands on nearly anything I need. I'll use as an example, the lipped rubber engine surround seal on our 1982 Westy, though I've had the same experience on other parts.

Accomplished List vendor #1: didn't list it; or hardly anything else for aircooled Vanagons Accomplished List vendor #2: listed it; $79.00. Later, I got a call from vendor saying it was out of stock and they refused to "back order" it; they had to drop it from my order. Still have to pay shipping and wait 3-5 days. Respected VW Rubber Co.: Listed it: $120. Didn't list the other two little rubber jeebers I needed to complete my work.

Called VW dealer: "Got it" $99. Sweet. Arcane boot I was sure would be NLA was $20, and other rubber jeeber $2 both available "tomorrow".

Maybe VW dealer costs a little more than some, but they have the stuff (or can get it) and form my experience, they really like to see the old VWs kept up in good shape. Mine usually slides me some sort of "old VW/VOA". Dealer will always be higher for stuff you ought to get at AutoZone (plugs, O2 sensor, filters, oil, Aunty Freeze, etc.) for VW specific parts, the dealer is one of several options in my book.

Hi Clive,

The current astronomical VW parts pricing includes the obscene cost of paying the "Royal" VW elite executives starting with their "Pope" or CEO. As their consumption crazy saleries and stock options swirl higher and higher, the parts prices of VW cars manufactured well before they were hired are forced to bear this economic load. However the greedy, self-serving VW "Royal executives" simply thumb their noses at the working proletariat using thier products and demand higher parts prices to maintain their extravagant, executive life style. The Executive leadership of VW GMBH is hardly different from the criminals at ENRON !!!!!!!!!!!!! OFF with their heads!!!

Regards, John
