Call the Colorado highway patrol, and the Utah Highway patrol (numbers are on the web sites) and get a straight answer that you can rely on. Get a name of the officer, or whomever, that you speak with.

You could drive it home without doing anything and the odds are you would be fine, but on the other hand, if you get pulled over by an officer not having a great day, you could end up paying to get your van out of the yard after they impound it. If you get into a wreck and someone proves the brakes weren't up to snuff on the unregistered van, it could get ugly for you. Just saying "a guy on the VW list said..." ain't gonna help you <g>

You will find that its not gonna be hard to do, but do yourself a favor and go about it the right way. Then you can enjoy your trip home and spend time learning about the van, rather than worrying every time a patrol car comes into sight.
