Take your van up some of the jeep roads around the San Juan Mountains of Colorado - Durango, Ouray, etc. I did a little bit of this in a rental Ford 2wd cargo van (support vehicle for bicycle tour) in 1997 and it was awesome, although the choice of vehicle left a lot to be desired. I would love to do it again more extensively in a Syncro Vanagon and also stop to camp at altitude off the beaten track as it were. Incredible beauty, old mining ruins, ghost towns, views that go on forever.............
