Sure, I know what the mystery led is. It is in fact the fridge pilot led (flame on led). Since 80/81 Westys came some with fridges and some without VW designed one panel to work with both. The metal cover has an extra hole drilled in it for the center led on panels for fridge equipped models.

In 82 they stopped making the fridge less basic camper and the panels were changed to put the fridge led at the bottom of the row of leds for the water tank. These also deleted the "feature" that disabled the water pump when the tank was empty.

The 80/81 fridge equipped models often did not make use of the pilot/flame led even though the panel had it. Instead these models have a little gauge inside the door and the needle on the gauge moves from a red zone when the pilot is off to a green zone when the pilot is lit. Of course these require you to open the door and look at the panel to know if the flame is still going. These fridges will not light the pilot led even if it is present on the panel unless someone has added the extra wire from the thermocouple to the panel connector.
