Subject: 2.1 l running poorly

Hello all,

My '88 is behaving badly and I'm hoping that someone will have some words of wisdom to pass along.

It runs fairly well on cold start-up in the morning, but after being driven a while and restarted, it feels like it is running on three cylinders. This started about three weeks ago and came on rather suddnely.

It runs OK at speed and at idle, but poorly when accelerating. Throttle position does not seem to be a factor, but perhaps manifold vacuum is, as the symptoms will sometimes go away when I lift the gas pedal a bit.

I've checked around for vacuum leaks, and don't have any opbvious ones. The TPS seems to adjusted OK. I noticed a burning oil smell this afternoon which seems to be coming from the tin over the exhaust; hot exhaust = lean burn condition?

The symptoms seemed to go away (or at least abate) after I added a bottle of Techron, but came back shortly afterward. I'll admit to using about ten gallons of old gas after the Techron treatment (duh - my dumb).

Thanks in advance,

Karl Wolz
