The sender is supposed to be tapped into the secondary sump, at an angle
on the little dimple on the sump. You need to remove the secondary sump
plate, drill a hole through the plate, have a nut welded to the sump
plate to receive the threads of the sender. Once you get the secondary
sump plate off, you'll see where the sender goes.
This is how VDO/Porsche set it up on the 914 with the oil temp gauge.
PIA, but the right way to do it. OR you could call Automobile Atlanta,
and see if they sell sump plates already set up for this installation.
I'd bet they do.

Subject: Another VDO Gauge question: Oil Temp Sender doesn't fit in
Drain hole?
Hello all:
>From my earlier post and this one I guess you've
figured out today is official "VDO Gauge Install Day"
here in Hooterville...
I ordered a 300 degree oil temp VDO gauge and sender
from Bus Depot...my mechanic (installing it) just
found out the sender won't fit in the oil drain plug.
Called Bus Depot...guy at the counter says to
tap&drill a new hole. Has anyone out there run into
(got a solution to) this problem??? Fast responses
are appreciated as I'm trying to resolve this today.
