I only use the term "Westfalia" to distinguish between pop-top campers and non-pop tops. Remember that the T2 generation had non-pop top campers with full Westfalia interiors; they just lacked the pop-top.

>>> Timothy Hannink <tjhannink@YAHOO.COM> 09/11/02 10:08AM >>> The non-camper US models that I personally have seen that have had a Westfalia badged seating package would include 1987 1/2 and up Wolfsburg Edition badged Vanagon GL's and Carats.

My guess is that the Westfalia interiors/conversions made to non-camper models were done at the VW factory with the interior packages being designed and labeled (and possibly built and supplied) by Westfalia. I can't see VW spending the money to ship all of those vehicles out of house to complete just the interiors.

The camper models (Camper, Camper GL and Multivan) were all converted at Westfalia due to the extra labor involved including the installation of the pop-top, air conditioning equipment (if needed) and associated cabinetry.

So could any van with a Westfalia badge be considered a "Westy"? Or does it have to have a pop-top? Or built-in appliances?

Tim 1987 Vanagon Camper "Westy"?
