The gears have stripped inside the head.  Any VDO shop should be able to fix
it, and/or sell you the repair kit if you want to try to fix it yourself.
Talk to your mechanic to see where they have there speedo work done.

I've had good experiences with Deluxe Speedometer in Denver.  At Speer and
14th.  303-629-6958.  Talk to John.  He's a good egg.  If you happen to be in
this area.
