Good question. What is the difference?

Do both vehicles have a Westfalia badge on the rear seat base close to the sliding door?

As offered elsewhere on this list, it is postulated that VW finished the interiors of the GL models and Westfalia finished the interiors of the Wolfsburg and Carat models (Westfalia possibly shipping interior kits to VW at Hanover for installation at the Vanagon assembly line).

This is an attractive theory and I subscribe to it, until someone disproves it.

Until they do, I would say that the difference between your van and your father's van is in name only.
