I guess it is different in the west, or at least in my area.

I just spoke with AAA here in SLC, and the explanation I got is this:

Within city limits, they will hook up and tow the vehicle five miles for
no charge. Beyond that is a mileage charge.

If you are out on a trip, outside of the 'city limits' and more than five
miles from their nearest tow service, the tow truck will pick you up, and
take you back to his shop at no charge, regardless of the mileage. So if I
am on my way to Las Vegas, and breakdown in Central Utah, I will get towed
to a shop, no matter how far it its for no charge. They did mention that
some of their towing contractors are not repair shops, and that in such a
circumstance, they would tow me back to their place of business, and then
five miles in any direction from there.

That doesn't always get you to a VW shop, but it does get you back to
civilization in almost any case, for no extra charge.

So if this happens to someone in the CA/UT/NV group, this should apply. I
wouldn't think its very far to the nearest towing contractor anymore, but
in the west, it could easily exceed that five miles.
