Subject: '87 Syncro Westy (TIICO)
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

I'm in full possession of this new acquisition and all it's pieces. I was given a 4-bike trailer-hitch-type bike carrier, Thule Summit top "box" (7+ ft. long), Thule roof rack. The TIICO has been in 18 mo. and has about 5K on it. Total of 90K mi. The '91 Westy I had had the full electric compliment and this has manual, which I like the simplicity and reliability of. Just for reference purposes for anyone looking at getting one in your area, I paid $15K.

Needs: shocks and the a/c clutch bearing is noisy. All systems and internal camper parts work well. I'm finding out just how specific the front shock mfg options are. Looks like a $400.00+ investment at this point. Maybe even Syncro springs all-round.

Question: has anyone changed the front shocks? Can I do it without a spring compressor, but use a small hydraulic jack under the lower control arm to "hold" things in place while removing the shock?

This appears to be a van that can cruise on long trips at pretty high speed with ease. On my trips to work I cruise at 80 mph at 4200 rpm, 2100 rpm below redline. And any thoughts about switching to synthetic oil and what viscosity. Thinking 10-40 seems about right, but??? Thanks for any comments or help.
