Okay - wow - so when I got the van I noticed that the coolant refill tank had black gunk in it.  Showed it to the mechanic and they told me not to worry about it.  And now the last mechanic (a good guy but not a VW specialist) said it had a "funny smell" but didn't think he was qualified to diagnose it.  So now I'm thinking from what everyone has said that it IS a head gasket problem.  ARG.  Van supposedly had a new engine when I bought it but the PO mysteriously couldn't find the paperwork on it.  Although its overheated on me twice, so I suppose it could have happened during one of those episodes.  I've got to drive to Maine tomorrow - am I going to do serious damage driving it on the highway with a slow leak?  Or should I just stop a lot and check the coolant level?  The hose from the refill tank to the expansion tank is brand new so that can't be it.  I'll swing by the mechanic or by NAPA today to get the tool to do the pressure test.

Well, yes the cap is ONE of the problem (coolant not going from the refill
tank to the exp. tank) but if you are loosing coolant in the tank it's
because it is going somewhere else!!!!

You could have a slow leak (like one said) or a worse problem...

First change the cap and see!!!! (could be it!!! yes that could be your
only problem, IN and OUT pressure)

Second, have (or do your self) the following test done:

With this test you will find your problem for sure.

I hope it's not a head gasket or a crack in the head.
