There are a thousand ways to skin this cat. Some involve bias voltages triggering transistors, some would use a A/D converter outputting to a octal or hex decoder... Me (a computer engineer), I would buy the $8.95 kit and be done with it. A little solder, a few tests, install it, and then it's Miller time. Well, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale time.
