Can anyone advise me of a "safe" way to remove old, worn WESTFALIA decals?

My father always told me to use WD 40 to get old stickers off things. I know it works on windows, don't know what affect it might have on paint. He's a bright guy, most of his tricks work. Here's another odd one, rub the rust off chrome with the shiny side of aluminum foil.
