Thought I'd toss in my 1990 Carats Mileage Story:

Replaced original 2.1L at 208,000...still running strong...never had head problems. Just figured it was time...so I got an 'new" engine from VW. Replaced Auto Trans at 250,000....never a problem of any kind with it...just found one with 90k and threw it in to be safe. Van itself now has over 300,000 miles on it...lots of replaced parts...and it's been giving me Hell for the last year...but she was so reliable for so long I continue to tolerate her latest shenanigans.

Of course, if my neighbor would part with that Westy cheap.....
