Odd. I once towed a 1975 VW bus on a U-Haul Auto Transporter with an E-150. Not only did the U-Haul place not object to this, they hooked up the trailer for me and helped me unhook it again (*after* I'd loaded the bus) and flip over my tongue adapter when it turned out to be set too low. I'd say if one U-Haul place won't let you do it, try another.
