If those heads work, why swap them out? Check the compression to see if any sicko surprises await, and if not, USE them Buy the exhaust system from a bus and party on.

Though it may be *possible* to pull the heads with the motor in the van, you would be a sick man indeed to even try it. You'ld be looking at probably 5 times the effort of pulling the motor, combined with 10 time the busted knuckles and 100 times the "ah-sh*t!" errors due to the cramped space, and being leaned over the motor box.

Pull the motor if you are going to do anything on this vehicle. It takes about 30 minutes to get it out, and about 50 min to put it back/hook up stuff.

All-

If anyone has been paying attention ... I 'bought' an 82 humpty dumpty van. I got it back together enough to see if I could get it to fire and yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus ... with no exhaust on it ... man, it was loud! Neighbors *love* me. ;)

Looked at how the exhaust connects and realized the buffoon PO tried to swap an early type2 head on there - so, the vanagon exhaust will not connect. So, I'm going to take a chance on a junkyard head ...

1. Is there a right-left difference in the heads? 2. What should I look for in a junk-yard special? 3. Can I swap the head w/out dropping the engine?

No, I don't have a Bentley, yet. Have a hard time spending as much as for manuals as I'll have spent on the van ...
