Right now on my '82 diesel I have a Mystery Wire in the engine bay. It comes out of the wiring harness near the glow plug relay and stops about three inches later, broken off. The color code *looks* like the same colors as the temp gauge wire (though all these wires are faded enough that it's not easy to tell) but I *have* a temp gauge wire, it's complete, and my temp gauge works fine.

The worst wiring horror story I've heard was about a guy who bought a Beetle and found it had been completely rewired -- with all the same color wire.
