I use brass nuts on the cross-over pipe, cat, and muffler to tailpipe for this reason. Stick with VW steel on the manifold-to-head nuts.

Back in my days as an aircraft mechanic, brass nuts were used on exhaust studs because they do not seize on the stud after they get hot. Something to consider.
