On OEM Early Model Type IV heads there was left and right, the only difference being the threaded port for the temp sensor. Otherwise that are both the same. Late model 79-83 Vanagon Air Cooled should be the same, however if the heads have been rebuilt before you might find more or less threaded ports for the temp sensor.
