Hi Ken:

The thermostat is a new 80 degree one, switched earlier in the summer. (the van has acted the same despite the new thermostat)

The Van wasn't overheating when I took the readings...it holds steady with the needle right over the flashing red light.

The symptoms are that the temperature gauge rises only when going up long hills...sometimes it only climbs to 3/4 way...but if the hill is steep enough she'll overheat and blow steam (I shut her down before this goes too far) Here is the latest:

I had my mechanic bleed her and top off the coolant last week while he was doing some other work (installing my gauges....oil pressure & volts are done, Oil Temp waiting on sender, coolant temp...trying to figure where/how to install it the sender.) Anyway...he opened the expansion tank when I picked her up and topped her off full. The light didn't blink for several miles...then came on. Next morning I topped off Expansion tank again...coolant light didn't blink for awhile...temp climbed while going upo a hill...coolant light blinking again. Note: The mechanic also installed a rocker switch/relay so I can turn the fan on HIGH speed manually if she's getting hot. This morning I topped her off....no blinking light for quiet a ways...startede blinking again. Long hill ...emp climbed to 3/4...I kicked on High Speed fan and she cooled back down. When I got her home I let her cool about 1/2 hour...then opened the expansion tank to see if coolant was missing...as soon as I started to unscrew the top I could here air hissing....and the coolant filled up inside the expansion bottle (presumamably from the overflow tank.) It looked to be about 1/2 empty when it started to fill.

So...any ideas what the heck is going on? Like I said....I drove about 175 miles today and the only time the temp gauge rose above the red light was on the big, steep hill.

Thanks for your time and input....I gotta tell ya...this mystery is driving me F&%$#*@ NUTS!

Cheers! Kevin

By the way...if you'd like to talk in person my number is 814-445-4221..and I could call you back so you don't have to pay for it.
