The list is legion. Inline 4 cylinder VW/Audi engines, Inline 5 cylinder engines, Oettinger 6 cylinder boxer engines, VW VR 6 engines. Chevy V8 (I think it was Chevy and not Ford). Some of these are more difficult than others, or require a fair amount of expertise. The Inline 4 is popular now, because of Tiico's kits and the fact that you stay with VW parts. The Oettinger 6, I don't think is readily available in the US market (Oettinger was the OEM maker of the 4 cylinder wasserboxer engine, I understand).

The above is, of course, just the gas powered conversions. Diesel conversions also have been done (either from Vanagon Diesels or from Vanagon Gas bases). The 1.9TD is what I see available. I'm not sure anyone on the list has yet done a TDI conversion.
