You should not have to convert this to be "better" in some respects.
My recently rebuilt 81 Fed model gets 18 mpg after a complete rebuild and 7k
miles on her. I took her in at 6k miles for a tune up. It didn't need one (I
was told). she is still breaking in but I suspect a well maintained (or new)
air-cooled fed model engine should only need the ignition parts changed at
~6-10 k miles. Why go to this bother to switch it around. I think you have
to switch around the heat exchanges and the exhaust too. Way expensive.
