My dual aux 12-volt socket is external. I've attached it with velcro under the shelf, far right, just behind the driver's head. I also have a voltmeter for the aux battery beside it, velcro'd to the vertical shelf surface.

I like having the 12-volt socket in the middle of the van at chest height. I have a portable vertical 12v fluorescent lamp hooked to the westy lift bar and I can turn it on/off with just a light push/pull of the plug in the socket.
