Depends on whether you have a clear-coat finish or not. The '86 probably does (or did from new) and the '83 certainly does not.

I've used Meguiar's Body Scrub with fine results- it's not really a rubbing compound per se, but it does do the job without being too harsh. Between it and the polish (step 2), I got rid of a fairly heavy haze on my '86. Of course, it helped to have an orbital buffer! -Simon
