My 89 Corolla diesel wagon does this too. Quietens down once warm, and less noticable first thing on a warm morning also.

I doubt that it means anything... I hope it doesn't, as I've only just fitted the PS system from an 86 Corolla Sprinter (base commercial-market Corolla wagons in Japan don't have PS).

I hear that Subaru pumps in conversions are noisy too. Possibly impeller cavitation.
