Your headlights only get power when the ignition is on, but the parking
lights part of the headlight switch always has power...
You could pull the 'Red with yellow stripe' wire out of the headlight
switch and jump the 'Black with yellow' wire to the part of the connector
that the red with yellow used to go to...
That would have the Headlight wire providing all the juice for headlights
AND parking lights, and mean that the parking lights would go off with the
ignition.  It might also mean that the headlights are even slightly dimmer
than stock and then you could enjoy doing the relays upgrade.
This doesn't set you up with the La Cucaracha music, but it can save you a
few jump starts.

If you really want the La Cucaracha circuit, it'll require you to purchase
a relay, but it's possible...
Describe to me what the little music box looks like, does it have only 2
connectors on it? If it has more than 2, are they in any way
labelled?  I've never heard of a vanagon having anything but a simple
little 2 connection buzzer for the door open annoyance, but I dunno what
your PO might have found.

In the 1985, the seatbelt annoyance buzzer is the same buzzer as the door
open annoyance.  Do you remember if La Cucaracha used to play when you
started the van up with your seatbelt unplugged? If not there might already
be some fance wire cutting going on.
