Subject: 86 fuel filter fix and frustrations...
Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII

If you have an 86 with 2 fuel filters listen up...

VW discontinued production of the small square fuel filter before the fuel pump (bastards!). According to my dealer and Vanagain it is certainly NLA. If you order a small square filter for replacement you will likely get one with different inlet and outlet sizes that will not fit the hoses coming out of the gas tank and going into the fuel filter. Go to your FLAPS and get 3 feet of .5 inch fuel line and a fuel filter with .5 inch inlet and outlet sizes. Rip out the old fuel line and discontinued filter and replace with .5 inch line and cheaper new filter from a common (read: parts still available) car. The .5 inch is slightly bigger than VW's original size but I have been running mine like this for a few weeks and no signs of leakage or anything.

If anyone knew how long i spent trying to get teh right fuel filter for this POS van they would have me institutionalized.

If anybody wants to buy my van after this winter let me know. Im going American with a custom camping interior and poptop from sportsmobile.

Good Luck! Andrew Fox 86 Westy Fort COllins CO
