Volks,

The only reason they cost so much because there are Americans lining up to pay silly money for one. Mainly because they are buying an exclusive and rare VW, as well as the fact that it's viewed as forbidden fruit in the US. But if you think the price is crazy, have a look at what old muscle cars fetch. The price is only as high as what people are willing to pay for one.

Any where else in the world the prices for a Tri-Star are reasonable. The last Tri-Star I saw for sale in Canada was listed at $15,000 CAD or about $9,300 USD. Most of the European Tri-Stars were not as nicely equipped as the Canadian Tri-Stars, but they did get the option of ABS as well as headlight washers. Also the first 100 Tri-Stars were built in Hanover as RWD models. Only later on did production switch to Graz, and all were then Syncro models. A rear wheel drive model is quiet reasonable price wise, when they do come up for sale.

As an aside I do have a set of the Tri-Star aluminium drop sides and tail gate for a Tri-Star for sale, So maybe that would be a cheaper and easier than a fourth door. Also the fourth door is available from a Canadian VW dealer parts department if you really wanted the fourth door.

Hi Kim,

I just wanted to comment that I think the D/Cab TriStar is as vastly overrated as teenage sex. The cost of that fourth door causes the price of the Double Cab to become ridiculous. As for headlight washers and the antenna location, it can't justify the price of Fastforward and other Canadian sellers!

Regards, John
