The regulator brushes and/or alternator bearings are worn and making poor contact. Dennis

Hi y'all,

Today I did a 423 mile round trip in my '84 VW Transporter-based Reimo camper a.k.a. "Vera Vanagon". Soon after starting the outward journey, driving at 65 mph I noticed the alternator warning light flickering at me. I slowed down, expecting to have to stop but the light went out at about 58 mph.

I carried on driving. I watched the light at a range of different road speeds. At 70 mph the light was fully on, constantly glowing bright red. Just below 60 mph it went out. In between it flickered, gathering in brightness as my speed increased.

I had my headlights on for the last half of the return journey and this seemed to lower the speed at which the red light came on by 3 to 5 mph.

Before I speculate wildly about what is going on here, I thought I should ask some wiser people what they thought might be happening.

Hence this question!

Best regards,

Tony

'84 Vanagon Reimo camper
