I'm the original postee for this - it was my understanding - and I'm certainly no expert - but my understanding was that the 80 thermostat kicks in the fan at a lower temperature, thereby keeping the van cooler instead of waiting until it reaches 87 degrees.  Yes - I do have a lot more going on wrong with the van, but it has helped with my overheating problem.  Now I'm in the process of ordering the cooling hose kit so I can replace all the hoses at once.  Basically my van needs an entire overhaul - just bought it a year ago - because its been near the ocean its whole life and has a lot of corrosion issues.  But thanks for the post - if you think there is something else in particular I should look at please let me know.

I hate to be the wet blanket. And I mention this only in an attempt to
educate myself.

If a bus needs a cooler thermostat to run at "normal" temp, in this case the
80 degree thermostat, isn't that a symptom of another problem--poorly
functioning radiator or water pump possilby?

It seems that the normal thermostat, which I think in the 85 degree, should
allow the engine to run at the "normal" temp. And if it doesn't something
somewhere is wrong.
This unless the bus is run in extreme desert climate or up hill all the time.
I'm curious, and I would hate to see the original postee fix the symptom and
end up with a more expensive problem down the road--made worse by prolonging
the situation with the cooler thermostat.
