Several years ago I installed a pair of K-Mart-acquired fold up, expandable cup holders (very much like the ones used on the weekender) on either side of the auto tranny shift cover.

They work great.

FWIW, I imagine that you 'clutchies' could install them on the heater panel cover (on either side of the shifter).
