I would believe it if he pressurized the cylinder(s) with air without
cranking the engine. Cranking the engine could produce some bubbles by
moving coolant through the system. There are all kinds of places air could
be trapped. I guess if it was a steady stream of bubbles? The bubbles
should continue for a while after the cranking has stopped, if his theory
is true. (At least until the compresion leaks down to some point.) Why
not attach an air hose to a compression gauge fitting and see if you can
produce the same bubbles? I have a friend who has a similar problem. I
may try this on his engine.

Hello All:
Anyone following my threads about my 1990 Carat
overheating uphill knows I've been trying to figure
this out for awhile. I took her to a guy this morning
that said he had a simple test...he removed the
Expansion Tank cap...pulled the coil off the rotor and
had his assistant turn the engine over. Bubbles could
be seen in the Expansion Tank as the engine cranked.
He says that's a sure sign...bad Head Gaskets or
cracked head.
Is he correct? Any and all input appreciated.
