I bet you're right. Why that didn't occur to me, I don't know. Next time I'll put the van on jackstands first, to take the give out of the suspension.

Right, I wouldn't be comfortable putting a jack under that pan. For what I was doing (removing the driver's side mount to get the exhaust manifold off) I used a bottle jack under the lifting ear that points downward at the bottom of the block.

Still have to put that manifold back on, after taking care of problems with the pipe that's hopelessly stuck to it. This is not going to be fun.
