Heh. True enough, though that also means it's hard for people to tell if you've aimed them badly. ;) In a pinch I've sometimes made a road job of it, going out to a quiet stretch of road at night, driving a bit to judge the pattern, then pulling off and tweaking the lights a bit until it 'looks right'. Usually high beams are aimed straight ahead and very slightly downward, and I find that pattern easiest to judge on the road. (Besides, if you drive a lot of dark, infrequently travelled country roads, like I was doing last time I had to do this, you're mostly interested in the high beams anyway.) On dual-filament lights the low-beam pattern will more or less take care of itself if you get the high beams close to right. Besides, this is a Vanagon we're talking about -- the stock headlights aren't bright enough to blind anyone anyway. ;)
