You will need a new driver side metal motor mount as the factory one will
interfere with the turbo charger.
We have these for $149 USD - they are our 2nd and much improved revision of
these mounts and they fit 100% - they even come with the exhaust mounting
bracket to bolt your rubber exhaust mount up to it.
Free shipping on these mounts for Vanagon / Syncro list members.
Apart from that - there are a few other things you will have to do to make
it all work.
1 New exhaust system as the original one won't work (for obvious reasons).
2 Modify the oil return line from the turbo - the oil return line CAN NOT go
up hill or on the level - it must always drain down! What you will have to
do is drill a hole in your aluminium oil pan and visit a hydraulic shop to
get those nifty compression fittings and a new return line to this fitting
and the turbo so the turbo drains straight into the pan - last one we did
cost us about $45 CAD for the parts.
3 Not a big one, but it can be an annoyance - turbo chargers make a lot of
intake noise - the factory Diesel air box will not muffle it as much as most
people would like. I have made a nice air intake system from my 1.9TD and
my soon to be 1.9TDI - basically it is 6" ABS sewer pipe with caps on
either end. This box (tube?) sits behind the driver side tail light. On
one side of it there is a 90 degree elbow going up to the factory air
snorkel to get nice cold air from the outside. The down stream side of this
box has a straight pipe that I use some flexible agricultural 2" water pipe
to give it some flex before going to the 1.5" ID ABS sewer pipe (I love that
stuff) which has by great coincidence the same OD as the turbo charger 1
7/8". Inside the 6" ABS tube is a cone style air filter clamped onto the
end of the straight pipe - just don't glue the tube together! Between the
turbo and the ABS pipe there is 4" of high temp silicone pipe with stainless
clamps holding these. I also drilled a small hole into this and plumbed a
smaller 3/4" pipe into this for the crank case vent. I have pictures of
this neat setup if you would like them.
Other than that - it is a 'simple' drop in - not a whole lot of work, just
some things you have to spend a little time at.

Volks, still ruminating over a replacement engine for my van, and got
a line on a 83 jetta turbo diesel salvage car. I've tried to find
out if that 1.6L TD is an easy bolt in or not to my 82 diesel
vanagon. one source says no, not without modifying/customizing
engine mounts, and the other source says yeah, no sweat, just drop it
in. whats the word?
