I go off road at several Texas lakes and in some rough terrain in hunting
seasons.
The hunters usually take somebody's old Dodge Ramcharger with spray can
camouflage finish out on their jaunts.
As far as rough terrain at the lakes I see mostly older pickup trucks and
I've never seen anything newer than about 1990 going off road.
I had a 1975 Land Cruiser in 1975-79 and I spent a fair amount of my free
time dragging out CJ-5s and CJ-7s that couldn't cut the mustard in the
outback.
I would seriously doubt the manufacturers claims about off-roading
ability of any SUV other than the Land Rover.
The over the road version of the Humvee certainly couldn't cut it.
The real off roading vehicles I see belong to the utility companies and
range from all wheel drive Suburbans to all wheel drive Doolies or the
all wheel drive units used by Customs and Border Patrol. One must
consider that the real off road vehicles are fairly abrasive in the ride
comfort area ........... my 'going to war' version of the Land Cruiser
nearly beat me to death and got very poor fuel economy.
