I had the same problem with my '84GL 1.9l... Finally had to have AAA
tow me to my mechanic. It seems I cleaned the contacts on my AFM too
well. I used a pencil eraser as someone suggested but a little tooo
hard and removed the tracks. My mechanic had a used AFM out of a van
converted to Subie power and put it in mine. Since then, it has run
great! Maybe your AFM needs to be cleaned...

When I say cut out, I mean cut out. It's like the ignition has been turned off, and then comes back (usually in about a second). If the revs are low, such as when I pull away at a nasty juction this can cause it to die. This morning at at tick over the engine just cut and stopped twice.
