I find the same thing. Performance in the 70-85 mph range is on par with
my Jetta TD, pretty tolerable. 55mph - 70mph is a lesson in
determination.
Someone last night said their I4 Westy would do 0-60 in 30-ish, but he
didn't do it from a dead stop. I'd ask that person to re-do the test
from a complete stop. My wife even commented during our test run that it
took nearly 8 seconds just to get the van rolling at 5-7 mph. Also, I'll
retest tomorrow without the wife, with the water tank drained, most of
the camping gear removed, a half-tank of fuel, and the middle seat out
so it should be about 400 lbs lighter. More curious than anything else.

I just roadtested my 81.............3300 rpms at 60 mph, 3800 at 70,
4100
at 80 mph..........It accelerates quicker from 70 to 80 then than 60 to
70
cause of that tall 4th gear....................
