I have. Encountered it while taking my Westy Syncro up Monarch pass (US 50 in Colorado). I tried to maintain 30mph in 2nd gear. The engine was willing, but the cooling system was not up to the task. Altitude and load contributed to the situation where the high speed fan just couldn't cool it enough.
