If the engine is free, I guess you've got nothing to lose. But if it were me I'd try and get an 86 or newer TD engine. VW made some improvements over the 1985 and older engines. I can't remember all the changes, but: cylinder head, brake system vacuum pump, piston oil cooling are some things.
