Doesn't make sense to me, the relief valve should have been closed ever
since the engine came up somewhere near operating temp.

Have you tried it with less oil (like only 1/4 up from the fill
mark)?  There's good documentation that if these engines are overfilled
even the slightest amount the oil temps go way up and the oil becomes
aerated.  Various people never run them above halfway on the stick.
